Print ID cards from Chrome or Edge

Updated .

Badgewright prints through your card printer’s own Windows driver, from Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Nothing else is installed. Set the card size to CR80 in the driver once, then in the browser’s print dialog pick the card printer, set margins to None and scale to 100%, and turn headers and footers off.

Printing is documented on Windows. A print from a Mac or a Chromebook has not been tried yet, so this article does not cover one.

Before the first print: set up the driver

  1. Install the driver from your printer’s manufacturer, such as HID Fargo, Evolis or Zebra, and print a test card from Windows itself. If Windows cannot print a card, the browser cannot either.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, choose the card printer, and open Printing preferences.
  3. Set the card or paper size to CR80 (85.6 × 54 mm, 3.375 × 2.125 in). Making CR80 the default here keeps the browser from printing on Letter or A4.
  4. Set the orientation to match your card design: portrait or landscape.
  5. For two-sided designs, turn on duplex (printing both sides). See two-sided cards.

The same checklist is in the app, under Admin > Printers, in the Driver setup checklist panel.

  1. Open Search & Print, under Print in the sidebar. To enroll someone and print their card in one step, use Capture & Print instead.
  2. Choose a template, then tick the people whose cards you want. You can select up to 500 cards in one job.
  3. Check the Station printer in the side panel. It is the printer profile this computer uses, saved in this browser. See printer profiles and the alignment test card.
  4. Press Print 12 cards (the button counts your selection). Badgewright renders every card at 300 dpi, then opens the browser’s print dialog.
  5. In the print dialog:
    • Choose the card printer, and paper size CR80 if it is listed.
    • Set margins to None.
    • Set scale to Default or 100%, not “Fit to page” or “Fit to printable area”.
    • Turn off headers and footers.
    • If you need a driver setting the dialog does not show, choose Print using system dialog (Ctrl+Shift+P).
  6. After printing, Badgewright asks Did the cards print correctly? Check position, colors and barcodes, then press Yes, mark as printed. That adds the cards to each person’s print history. Press No, cancel this job if they did not come out.

Check the page size without wasting cards

Choose Save as PDF as the printer in the dialog. You should get one page per card side, each exactly the size of the card. If the pages are Letter or A4, the dialog’s paper size or margins are not set as above.

If you closed the page before confirming

The job stays Pending and no cards are counted. Open it from Recent print jobs on the home page, or from Reports, and choose Mark as printed if the cards came out correctly, or Cancel job if they did not.
